“Jivamukti Yoga is a pathway to liberation through compassion for all beings.”
Sharon Gannon
What is Jivamukti Yoga
Jivamukti Yoga is a dynamic yoga method that combines intelligently sequenced asanas in a Vinyasa style with meditation, breath awareness, music, and spiritual teachings to create a holistic and transformative practice. The word Jivamukti is derived from the Sanskrit words jīva, meaning “individual soul” or “living being” , and mukti, meaning “liberation”.
The Founders of Jivamukti Yoga
Founded in 1984 by Sharon Gannon and David Life, the method integrates the physical, philosophical, and spiritual aspects of yoga and is rooted in five central tenets: Bhakti (devotion), Ahimsa (non-harming), Nada (deep listening), Dhyana (meditation) and Sastra (spiritual teachings). Beyond the physical postures, the practice encourages self-awareness, compassion, and the recognition of our interconnectedness with all living beings and the Earth itself.
Relationship to the Earth
Jivamukti Yoga embraces Patanjali's teaching that asana should be sthira (steady) and sukha (easeful or sweet). The method is rooted in the original meaning of the Sanskrit word asana, which translates as “seat” or “posture.” In this understanding, asana becomes more than physical exercise; it reflects our relationship to ourselves, to others, to the Earth, and to all living beings, cultivating balance, compassion, and mutual respect.
All is ONE
Practiced in this way, yoga challenges the idea of separation and reminds us that all life is deeply interconnected – that ultimately, ALL IS ONE.
